Rising (Spring Kookaburra)
2020. Bitumen, oil, gouache, aquarelle, gesso and rabbit skin glue on stretched canvas. 80cm x 45cm. Location: Vincentia NSW 2540. The kookaburra featured was found deceased at Worrowing homestead in 2017. The figures consist of bitumen and oil (communicating European culture via materials) and are depicted following European naturalistic pictorial conventions. The gesso is applied to canvas sized with rabbit skin glue (in the European tradition) to construct the nest and internal space within the disintegrating figures. As a plastic medium adhering to the negative space in which the raw canvas nests are embedded, gesso speaks of modernity and its ubiquitous impact on the lives of the kookaburra and I.
